Action — What We Do

Four actions to revive the sea.

Reduce, restore, expand, nurture — simple, lasting methods honed over 25 years in the field.

ACTION 01

Reduce Thinning

Thinning out the urchins () that devour the beds, so seaweed can grow again.

In an isoyake sea, scarce food leaves gangaze urchins hollow yet abundant, and they devour seaweed sprouts before they can grow. Through steady hand-thinning while diving, we open up the “room” seaweed needs to take hold.

ACTION 02

Restore Reef & Cultivation

Rebuilding the seaweed forest methodically — with algal reefs and cultivated mother seaweed.

We protect and cultivate spore-bearing mother seaweed and install algal reefs as a foothold for it to root. Working with nature's own capacity to recover, we restore the beds across whole areas.

ACTION 03

Expand Expand

Sharing our restoration know-how with the region — and with allies across Japan.

We open up the procedures — and the record of failures — built up at Kushiura, through site visits and technical exchange. Different waters call for different answers; that is exactly why sharing field knowledge matters.

ACTION 04

Nurture Nurture

Growing relationships with other industries and with children.

Ocean-learning programs with local elementary schools, corporate training, co-creation across industries. Keeping the sea's recovery from becoming “the fishers' job alone” is, we believe, how the work carries on to the next generation.

Science — Evidence-based

Verified by measurement, not by feel.

Working with research institutions, we record change through eDNA surveys and fixed-point monitoring. Not “it feels like it's come back,” but “what came back, and how much.” Honest reporting grounded in measurement is the foundation of our work.
